The first steps involve mouse-proofing your home especially the kitchen area. Keep food particles off the floor and counters. A couple times a day wipe down the counters and try to mop the floor as often as possible.
In the kitchen many leave things like phone cords or electrical cords hanging from counters. Keep these in their place so that mice can't use them to climb up to gain access to food.
Take your cereals and grains and put them up on high shelves in the kitchen. Things like canned goods or completely sealed containers can go on the lower levels.
Seal up the trash nightly. Make sure that it's taken out and put into a container that mice won't be able to get into. With a seal you can also prevent other insect based pests in your home.
If you find any holes or cracks in the wall, sealed up with steel wool since mice won't be able to chew through it.
To kill the mice poisons aren't always the best option. Mice will die from this but sometimes die stuck in the wall causing a horrible smell. Pets might find the poison or the mouse dead with poison inside them. Your children may also come in contact with the poison.
Traps are fairly effective. It will significantly reduce their numbers and are fairly safe to use. Electronic traps are typically more humane than other types of traps like snap traps and sticky traps.
Repellents should be used around your food supply as well. These would be things like peppermint oil on a cotton ball. Drop these into drawers and into cabinets that mice may have been in.
